Hiring a Mover

When planning your move, ask friends to recommend a professional moving company. Then ask the mover for references and  an estimate of fees (do they charge a flat rate or hourly fee?). When you have selected a mover, ask them to come to your home and confirm their estimate.

Make sure your belongings are insured during the move. Verify if your home insurance covers goods in transit.  Many moving companies offer additional insurance coverage. Professional movers are not responsible for items such as jewellery, money, or important papers. Do this yourself to keep them safe.

If you do your own packing, remember it can take up a lot of time!

Moving Day

On moving day, review any special items with the supervisor, who will note the condition of your goods on an inventory list which you should review with them.  When you get to your new home, make sure everything on the list is unloaded. If you paid for the movers to unpack boxes, remember that they will not put dishes etc into cupboards. Planning ahead will make the transition as smooth as possible.

Moving Costs

The amount you spend depends on the following decisions:

  • Do you want to hire professional movers?
  • If so, will it be a large company or a smaller local moving company?
  • Do you need to buy insurance to protect your items in transit?
  • If you plan to move yourself, will you rent a vehicle?
  • Do utility companies charge a fee to connect their services in your new home?
